Procedure for applying online for Indian Citizenship by descentunder Section 4(1) of the Citizenship Act 1955

In order to make the procedure for acquisition of Indian citizenship simpler, faster and transparent, the Ministry of Home Affairs have introduced a new procedure for applying online for Indian Citizenship under Section 4(1) of the Citizenship Act, 1955. The procedure for filing of on-line application for grant of Indian citizenship is mandatory w.e.f 01.07.2012

Applicants preferring application for Indian Citizenship by descent under Section 4(1) of the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955 has to make application online for quick processing by the concerned agencies.The hard copy of the online application for grant of citizenship under Section 4(1) of the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955 is to be submitted to the concerned Indian Mission/Post where the child was born. If the application is made within one year of his /her birth in the prescribed form to the Mission/Post, then the Mission/Post shall provide the Indian citizenship.In case the application is made after one year in the Indian mission/post abroad, then the application is to be sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs for their approval.The new procedure is available on MHA's website: GeneralInstruction.pdfpdf imageFormat-PDFSize-111kbLanguage-English
