High Commission of India Kuala Lumpur in partnership with Malaysia India Heritage Society and Indian Association Penang organised the Penang India Heritage Trail on 26 November 2023 in Penang. The event was organised to generate interest and to reacquaint the younger generation with the shared cultural heritage of Penang with India. Dato' Seri Sundarajoo Somu, Penang State EXCO for Housing and Environment , Chief Guest of Honor for the Inaugural Session; Ms Subhashini Narayanan, Deputy High Commissioner of India to Malaysia; Ms Amrita Dash, Counsellor, High Commission of India; and Mr Prabhakaran Nair, President, Malaysia India Heritage Society jointly flagged off the Heritage trail from the Indian Association Penang premises. The 4-hour long trail covered important places of literary and historical importance in Penang and had participation of 16 groups with over 64 participants and was held as part of the George Town Literary Festival. The Closing ceremony was officiated by YB Jagdeep Singh Deo, Hon'ble Deputy Chief Minister II, Penang. Speaking on the occasion, YB Jagdeep Singh congratulated the organisers stating that the heritage trail has sparked curiosity and connection, imparting valuable lessons on teamwork and problem-solving. He also mentioned that it was heartening to see Penang chosen as the venue, given its historical significance as a port of entry during colonial times. YB also committed to supporting similar heritage related events in future. Participants of the trail were awarded with trophies, certificates, attractive vouchers and cash prizes.
