Reasons Why Foreign F & B Companies Are Looking At India

Imports of agri-food products have increased rapidly with imported items commonly found in retail chain stores include: alcoholic beverages, breakfast cereals, confectionary, fresh and processed fruit and vegetables and pasta among others. Imported products may also fill some niches like organic, health or food supplements. India's the expanding middle-class population, modern retail formats and entry of international e-commerce platforms are driving growth in the country’s food and beverage (F&B) retail sector. India is projected to become the world’s largest consumer economy by 2025. Each year, India’s middle class adds approximately 20 million people to its ranks. Increasing purchasing power, the rise in double-income, no-kids households, and consumers moving away from a saving mindset towards living a better quality life are all driving consumption for foreign food & beverages.

The government of India has made F & B Processing a Priority Sector and taken many steps to  improve ease of doing business, reduce cost and time taken in importing food products, and improve India’s ranking in logistics performance indicators. Today, the Indian government uses information technology (IT) integration across the agencies involved in the import clearance process. It has introduced GST, simplified the legal & tax system, implemented electronic sealing of containers, upgraded port/air freight infrastructure, permited electronic submission of documents with digital signatures, made Food Safety and Standards Authority of India ( FSSAI) proactive, liberalized the functioning of Agricultural Produce Development Authority (APEDA) and Commodity Boards, etc. All of which reforms helped India jump to 63rd place out of 190 countries (from 77 the previous year) in The World Bank’s Doing Business 2020 report.

World Agro + F & B Brands - Now in India

As the world looks for new growth opportunities, here is an unusual peek into India’s food as well as opportunities to invest and prosper from one of the world’s largest consumer markets. India is the world’s oldest continuing civilization and has served the world’s tastes from Mesopotamia and the Pharaohs of Egypt to ancient China and beyond. Much of India’s historic exports have been processed food, spices, derivatives and additives.

Maharashtra and Goa are India’s western region’s leaders in food processing. While, Goa has the country’s highest standard of living, Mumbai is known internationally as India’s financial & trading capital. Together, they account for majority of the country’s Food & Beverage industry. Both states have a long standing & well-deserved reputation for offering the country’s finest Food & Beverages, combined with an excellent position as the gateway to the world’s largest market place..

Today, India is the fastest growing economy in the world and is home to over 1.3 billion people. The country’s rising disposable income has fuelled the growth of the world’s largest consumer market – especially for imported and foreign food products. The country is amongst the largest producers and consumers of food in the world opening up huge opportunities for specific post-harvest manufacturing/management technology suppliers, cold chain infrastructure and refrigerated transport players. Agro + Food & Beverage Pro World Expo’21 attracts the world’s best food processing companies and gives them a golden opportunity to harvest growth and reap profits from the world’s fastest growing economy.
