Deportation of Indians held in Malaysian Immigration detention centres

The High Commission of India in Kuala Lumpur has been working closely with the Government of Malaysia for the early repatriation of Indian nationals held in detention in various Immigration detention centres in Malaysia.

The Government of Malaysia has chartered two special flights to deport 367 Indians who were in various immigration detention centres across Malaysia. Accommodating Government of India’s request to repatriate Indian nationals according to their domicile, to enable suitable quarantining of the deportees on arrival in India, the Malaysian Government provided two charter flights operated by Malaysian Airlines, one to Amritsar and another to Chennai.

This deportation exercise, which saw seamless cooperation between the governments of Malaysia and India, was successfully carried out on 11 July 2020. The flight to Amritsar departed at 0950 hrs local time, carrying 219 Indians, while the flight to Chennai departed at 1210 hrs local time, carrying 148 Indians.

Separately, Government of India has, from 9 May till date, operated 27 flights under Vande Bharat Mission from Kuala Lumpur to various destinations in India to enable stranded Indians return to India. 4,679 Indians have returned to India on Vande Bharat flights so far. The High Commission of India in Kuala Lumpur appreciates the support and cooperation provided by the Government of Malaysia in the operation of Vande Bharat Mission flights from Kuala Lumpur.
